Hāngī ki te Whānau Ātea i Te Pane o Mataoho / Te Ara Pueru

Hāngī experience at the Whānau Ātea on Māngere Mountain

The Whānau Ātea is a unique space featuring award winning designs by Mana Whenua, Tūpuna Maunga Authority, and Boffa Miskell with support from a multitude of experts and teams to help this experience come alive.

There are multiple areas of māra hūpara (play spaces) featuring traditional Māori games for all ages, a basketball court, walking area, kī-o-rahi field, and the first hāngī pit in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) available for community bookings.

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority are honoured to be able to host the use of a community hāngī pit as part of the Whānau Ātea experience.

The hāngī pit was designed to help build stronger local communities by sharing kai (food) with whānau (family), friends, Mana Whenua, as well as the diverse range of community groups, sports groups, schools, and marae. Its innovative design allows for a traditional in-ground hāngī right in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau.

We have worked in partnership with Rewi Spraggon, the Hāngi Master, to bring this one-of-a-kind offer to life. Rewi and his team will deliver a hāngī experience not available anywhere else in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Rewi, and the Tūpuna Maunga Authority team have put together a special video, thanks to Little Kong Productions, about how to do an in-ground traditional hāngī. While it’s based at our unique site, these instructions can be used for any in-ground hāngī experience.

Community, Corporate & Fundraisers

The hāngī pit is available for community and corporate bookings, fundraisers, and private events such as birthdays or weddings. This can be done through filling out the booking form.

Hosting an event at Te Pane o Mataoho / Te Ara Pueru / Māngere Mountain or using the hāngī pit for an offsite fundraiser can be a unique and fun way to sell kai packages for any type of fundraiser from sporting events, school trips, and more.

From time to time the Tūpuna Maunga Authority will run community hāngī experiences where community can purchase hāngī meals from us. We will ensure to let the community know when these activations will happen and how to get involved with this experience.

Booking the Hāngī Pit

This is a great opportunity to learn about Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview) and understand more about the hāngī process. We encourage the hapori (community), manuhiri (visitors) and whānau to engage in this experience as it is great way to connect over kai with Te Ao Māori and each other.

There are three slots to choose from: morning, afternoon or the whole day. We recommend booking at least 4 weeks in advance to secure your date. We do get booked up quickly.

An initial booking fee of $1000 NZD is required to secure your preferred date. This must be paid within 2 working days of making your booking. If not, the booking will be cancelled to allow for other bookings.

Hāngī are designed to feed large groups of people and the community hāngī experience can accommodate 200 to 400 people. The more people the cheaper it is per head.

The cancellation and change policy can be found in the terms and conditions document.

Further information to consider

Breakdown of Costs

Costs per head are approximately $11-$16 (GST exclusive) dependent on the size of the group booking. Costs can also vary depending on number of people, seasonal vegetable pricing, or inflation.

The standard price includes the experience with the Hāngi Master team, the use of the unique hāngī pit on Te Pane o Mataoho / Te Ara Pueru / Māngere Mountain, all overhead costs, and our delicious standard menu (two meats, e.g., chicken and pork, three vegetables, e.g., pumpkin, potatoes, kūmara, and stuffing).

Extra requests such as other dietary requirements or food preparation practices can be discussed at the time of booking and will potentially be an additional cost. Customers will also need to make provisions for making up individual packs and purchasing containers for transportation. You can find packs from places like Gilmours, and Styrofoam transportation containers at Save Barn.

The total cost for the hāngī pit experience and kai could cost between $3,320 (GST exclusive) for 200 people (minimum capacity) and $4,560 (GST exclusive) for 400 people (maximum capacity) for the standard menu. This is inclusive of the initial $1000 NZD booking fee. Each serving is large and costs less than a typical combo meal from popular takeaway joints.

If you are booking the hāngī pit for fundraising purposes, we recommend a selling price between $20-$25 per meal. This could equate to making between $4,000-$6,000 for a full capacity standard menu fundraiser booking.

There is a payment plan option to help customers manage initial costs. Please contact us on Maunga Events if  necessary.
