Tūpuna Maunga Storm & Cyclone Gabrielle
Operational update (as of Thursday 16 February 2023)

This is an operational update that covers all known damage to Maunga from the recent storm event and through Cyclone Gabrielle. The damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle is mainly from fallen trees. The Operational team undertook proactive actions ahead of the cyclone including:

  • Sandbags and silt socks being put in place where areas of potential wash out were identified or where
water may need to be redirected.
  • Drains were checked and cleared in the days leading up to the cyclone.
  • Geotechnical specialists inspected higher risk sites/sites of existing slips to see if any further actions
were needed prior to the cyclone.
  • Polythene sheeting was applied in some areas to deal with sediment run off. At this juncture the team are working on the highest priority health and safety matters and will be cordoning off unsafe areas until contractors are available for remediation.

The next stage will be a programme to work with geotechnical experts, arborists, archaeologists, track remediation contractors, mana whenua, and maintenance contractors to consider remediation. Management
will report to the Authority in due course for direction.
