Research Permits and Scholarship
research on the tūpuna maunga
Research done on and about the Tūpuna Maunga, conducted in ecologically and culturally appropriate ways, allows people to practice kaitiakitanga towards the Maunga. Knowledge sharing creates connections between the people and the Maunga that benefit all.
Rangahau (research) enhances the wellbeing of our Maunga. It helps us all to understand the past, present, and future of the Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains).
The research scholarship was developed to both better engage with researchers, inform management of the Maunga, and ensure research is conducted appropriately.
A research permit allows safe practices for gathering physical samples (eg. soil, rock, plants), monitoring of conditions over time, experiments an or any socially-focused studies that take place on the Maunga but fall outside the definition of an event.'
Under this policy, research projects must be considerate of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority values, which are and can be found in the Integrated Management Plan:
- Wairuatanga / Spiritual Mana
- Aotūroa / Cultural and Heritage
- Takotoranga Whenua / Landscape
- Mauri Pūnaha Hauropi / Ecology and Biodiversity
- Mana Hononga Tangata / Living Connection
- Whai Rawa Whakauka / Economic and Commercial
- Mana Whai a Rēhia / Recreational
