Takarunga / Mt Victoria summit vehicle-free from March

Work begins this week on returning the tihi (summit) of Takarunga / Mt Victoria to a vehicle-free space. The tihi and the summit road will be permanently closed to all private motor vehicles including motorbikes and scooters from 1 March 2018.

Taonga at heart of new integrated maunga maintenance contract

The first ever single integrated maintenance contract for the Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) of Tāmaki Makaurau is now in place, with the taonga (treasures) that are the maunga at the heart of the new approach. The successful single provider for the five year contract is Recreational Services Limited.

Safer spaces on the way for Auckland’s ancestral mountains

Pedestrian-only areas at the tihi (summits) of five Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) will be introduced in 2017. The Tūpuna Maunga Authority decided at their meeting yesterday that the tihi of Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill, Maungarei/Mt Wellington, Ōwairaka/Mt Albert, Puketāpapa/Mt Roskill and Takarunga/Mt Victoria will become pedestrian-only spaces next year.

Public consultation opens on integrated plan for Auckland’s ancestral mountains

Public submissions are now being taken on an integrated management plan that will set the foundations for how Auckland’s Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains), or volcanic cones are valued, restored, protected and enhanced.
