Mahi on the Maunga 2025- plant natives with the Tūpuna Maunga this winter
This winter, why not take part in something meaningful? Join the Tūpuna Maunga Authority this planting season and help return endangered native ecosystems to the ancestral Maunga of Tāmaki Makaurau. From May through August, a series of community planting days will take place on the Tūpuna Maunga, and volunteers are warmly invited to come along.
Volunteering is open to all including individuals, whānau, school groups, and community organisations. Whether you’ve joined us before or this is your first time, you’ll be making a lasting contribution.
“This is about more than just planting trees,” says Jenny Gollin, Kaihautū Tiaki Koiora / Conservation Advisor with the Tūpuna Maunga Authority. “It’s about restoring the well-being of the whenua through native planting. We hope to strengthen the connection between people and the Maunga through this programme.”
The conservation team aim to plant approximately 15,000 eco-sourced native plants across the Maunga. This work supports the return of the WF7 Pūriri ecosystem, which once thrived in the rich volcanic soils of Tāmaki. Native species like Pūriri, Tōtara, Kohekohe, Harakeke, and Māhoe provide crucial habitat for native birds, lizards and insects to return and flourish.
Planting days are carefully timed in alignment with the Maramataka — the Māori lunar calendar to ensure optimal planting conditions.
