Maungarei / Mt Wellington track upgrades

The Authority will be undertaking track improvements at Maungarei / Mt Wellington starting approximately mid-February. These improvements include:

  • Building boxed steps and an aggregate track from the western Mountain Road entrance
  • Creation of an aggregate pedestrian path at Gollan Road along existing desire line
  • Constructing a new stone wall entrance from Fraser Road
  • Removal and replacing old fencing and gates with new timber ones
  • Removal of a large fallen pine trunk
  • Planting native species in the northeastern corner to discourage use of desire lines through archaeological features and slopes
  • Removing pest plant species to support ecological restoration

These enhancements will ensure better access while protecting the cultural and archaeological integrity of the Maunga and to the experience for all manuhiri (visitors).

Construction dates

Work is scheduled to begin in early-February and will take approximately 20-22 weeks to complete. Construction will be Monday to Friday (and Saturday morning, where required) during work hours to limit disturbance to neighbours.
