The Authority will be undertaking works to stabilise the old Batger Quarry retaining wall located on the south-western flank of Maungawhau / Mt Eden.

In the late 19th century (1800–1899), scoria and basalt rock were quarried from the site. When quarrying ceased, a concrete retaining wall was built to retain the steep quarry face.

The wall has been monitored by the Authority over several years, and recent findings have shown signs of deterioration due to its age and construction.

To ensure the continued safety of the Maunga, the wall and surrounding rock face need to be stabilised.

Timing of works

Work is expected to start in late April / early May 2026 and is expected to take approximately 2 – 3 months to complete.

Please note construction timeframes may be affected by weather or supply delays.

Scope of work

The work will involve installing an engineered draped mesh system over the quarry wall to stabilise the wall and any secure loose rock in the area.

The project will include approximately 260m² of mitigation planting to offset vegetation removal required within a Significant Ecological Area.

Work and access

Works will be carried out from Puhi Huia Road using specialist equipment and rope access systems.

During this time, a section of this road may be temporarily narrowed to allow contractors to safely establish their work area. The walking track below the quarry wall may also need to be closed at times for health and safety reasons.

Signage will be installed in advance advising of any temporary closures or changes to access.

Work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday during standard construction hours.

Pedestrian and vehicle access

The Maunga, including the tihi (summit), will remain open throughout the project. Emergency services, maintenance contractors, and public will continue to have access to the tihi via Puhi Huia Road.

Manuhiri (visitor) health and safety is a priority, so please follow all onsite signage and instructions from construction staff. Alternative routes will be signposted where required.
