This winter, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority is inviting volunteers across Tāmaki Makaurau to roll up their sleeves and take part in this year’s planting season.

Across four community planting days, volunteers will help plant more than 13,000 native plants across the tūpuna maunga. This is done by supporting the return of thriving native ecosystems and restoring these ancestral landscapes.

The plants selected are suited to volcanic soils and contribute to the restoration of the endangered WF7 Pūriri System, alongside rongoā species and harakeke (flax). Restoring native vegetation is a key focus of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority’s integrated management plan helping support the return of native biodiversity. This work contributes to building resilient, biodiverse ecosystems for future generations.

Open to individuals, whānau, schools and community groups, the planting days are a chance to get hands-on, learn more about the Maunga, and be part of something meaningful.

“We'd love to see as many people as possible come along, everyone is welcome. Bring your whānau and friends and come get stuck in.,” says Niwa Van Leeuwen, Kaihautū Tiaki Koiora / Conservation Advisor.

"It's a great opportunity to learn more about the Maunga, to connect and give back to te taiao and to come together as a community and help with the recloaking of our Maunga, supporting the ongoing care and wellbeing of these taonga."
