The Tūpuna Maunga Authority works alongside local community groups to support volunteers caring for the Tūpuna Maunga and the surrounding whenua (land).
From planting and weeding to pest trapping and biodiversity monitoring, there are lots of ways to get involved and help care for your local Maunga.

Volunteering is a great way to:

· Create thriving, pest free habitats for native birds, lizards, insects and plants
· Connect with your local community and contribute to meaningful conservation work
· Support a shared vision of healthy Maunga and neighbourhoods for future generations.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Whether you have a few hours to spare, want to volunteer regularly, or would like to help care for the environment around your local Maunga, there are lots of ways to get involved.
PLANTING DAYS
Each winter, the Authority hosts public planting days across the Tūpuna Maunga.
These hands-on, whānau-friendly events are a great way to get involved, connect with the whenua and meet others in your community.

- Connect with the whenua and other volunteers
- No experience is necessary
- Gloves and spades are provided

BE PART OF THE HALO PROJECT
The Halo Project is community-led effort to create a pest free buffer zone or “halo” around each Tūpuna Maunga.
By reducing pest plants and animals in neighbouring communities, we can help protect the Maunga from the reinvasion of pest species. This supports regenerating native forest and provides better habitat for native birds, lizards and insects – strengthening biodiversity both on the Maunga and in surrounding neighbourhoods.
If you live within 500 metres of a Tūpuna Maunga and are interested in being involved in supporting native wildlife in your backyard, connect with your local community conservation group and find out how you can get involved.
Many groups offer advice, support and in some cases, free traps to help residents participate in backyard trapping.

A community-led ecological restoration and outdoor learning programme for Takarunga Hauraki / Devonport Peninsula. The group is involved in ecological restoration, volunteering and pest trapping.
CENTRAL TĀMAKI
Maungawhau / Mt Eden
Friends of Maungawhau
Friends of Maungawhau is a volunteer group that helps protect, preserve and enhance Maungawhau / Mt Eden. The group has been active in ecological restoration and advocacy for the Maunga since the 1980s.
Volunteer opportunities include planting, weeding and working in the nursery.
Te Tātua a Riukiuta / Big King
Friends of Te Tātua a Riukiuta - Big King
Friends of Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta is a group for people who want to connect with others and support Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta / Big King.
The group is involved in volunteering and pest trapping.

Maungakiekie Songbird
Maungakiekie Songbird is a community-led project working to enhance habitat around Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill and bring back the birdsong.
The group is involved in volunteering and pest trapping.

Eastern Songbird
The Eastern Bays Songbird Project is a community conservation group working towards an area vibrant with bird life.
The group supports volunteering and pest trapping, helping create better habitat for native manu including tūī, pīwakawaka and kererū, while supporting the return of species such as kākāriki, korimako and kākā.
